More than just a Twitter list!

You probably started your Twitter adventure with just a few followers, mainly friends. Gradually your community has grown and now you spend ages sifting through the tweets, a lot of it being social noise, to find interesting posts. Can you imagine hundreds/thousands of people talking to you all at once in real life? As you continue to discover more and more users to follow, it becomes almost impossible to keep up with your timeline.

The solution: start using Twitter lists. Using lists can not only improve the organisation of your community, if you use Twitter for work, play or as a business you need to know who is influential in your community, who you can find interesting content from and who finally who to follow. Here are some Twitter list tips you may not already know…


Add anyone to a Twitter list

Did you know that you don’t have to follow someone to add them to a Twitter list? Users assume that similar to the direct message feature, you must have a following relationship with someone before you can organize them into Twitter lists. Now this just got interesting, the benefits of the list feature increase tenfold by allowing any user to be added.

Are your followers interesting?

If you’re a ‘Followback advocate’ you probably want to move on to the next point :-P.  Automatically following someone because they follow you, is a practice commonly debated by social experts. Some argue the followback is a form of courtesy, while others support the notion of following only those that really interest them. So how do you know if a follower has something to offer you? You can create a list for all your new followers and review what they publish to determine if you should follow them back or not.
